“Know Your Audience”
They call that the first rule of showbiz but really it’s the first rule of life.
You’re not going to tell dirty jokes to your grandma (unless you have that kind of grandma) and you don’t wear flip flops to traffic court (please).
But also, in this day and age, it also means that if your boss or HR director is a Facebook friend, you don’t post “I’m so over this job!” as a status update.
And if you put something derogatory about a coworker in an email and send it to the office gossip, expect it to be forwarded (in which case, everyone is your audience).
Remember that: Know your audience. It will serve you well.
