What to Bring on the Journey

As this blog will serve as your guidebook to the world of entertainment, it is useful, I think, to know what qualities will serve you best as you embark (or continue) on a career path in the industry.
1. Humility- I debated how to order #1 and #2 and went this way because I have been hearing a lot of established members of the industry lately complaining about interns and new hires being unwilling to do the hard work that will get them recognized and hired or promoted. By humility, I mean recognizing your place on the ladder and quietly contributing to the goals of your work environment without complaint or expectation. This is a shockingly efficient way to get noticed and move up.
2. Confidence- You may be new, but you have something to offer. You are capable of getting an internship or getting a job and doing it exceptionally well, and making strategic moves to get ahead. You may also have creative aspirations and you are capable of making those dreams a reality given time and a little luck. This industry could use someone with your unique abilities and qualities. Welcome.
3. Perseverence-Sorry to say this, but in spite of what you have to offer, until you have proven yourself, you will be met with quite a bit of indifference. Don’t be discouraged. It’s a crowded industry, with a lot of people coming in and saying they are going to make it to the top. Many- if not most- will leave when they realize what it takes. But you won’t. If you really, truly want to achieve your goals, you will tough it out and find a way. That is what it takes. Be in it for the long haul.

March 9, 2009 at 7:15 amExcellent points! As someone who has hired interns and entry level people, these are absolutely true. Unwilling to do hard work, or any work will get you noticed: noticed to NEVER hire you again.
One thing that also works for me with young people starting out: Ask as many questions as you have, when it’s appropriate. This is how you learn.
